Heat Wave Claims Third NYC Victim

"High environmental temperature" is official cause

A 22-year old Brooklyn man found dead in his apartment over the weekend is the latest casualty of the hottest summer in years.

The Office of the City Medical Examiner in NBCNewYork the death was certified as caused by Hyperthermia, "exposure to high environmental temperature."

The man, whose name and address were not released, died on Sunday, officials said.

Earlier this summer, on July 6, two other New Yorkers died of heat-related causes: A 46-year-old woman and a 70-year-old man.

Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner, said this has been a severe summer for heat, but so far pales in comparison to 1999.

That year -- which was before the city started regularly opening "cooling centers" -- more than 40 people died after a series of crippling hot spells.
