Andrew Cuomo wants Hillary's seat so bad he can taste it.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's desire for Hillary Clinton's soon-to-be vacated Senate seat is the worst kept secret in Albany.

Cuomo met last month with Gov. David Paterson, who is to select Clinton's successor, in the governor's Manhattan office to express his interest in the job, sources told the New York Daily News.

"We will not comment on the governor's process other than to say your information is factually inaccurate," Cuomo spokesman John Milgrim told the paper.

Paterson's office had nothing to say on the matter.

Thus far, Paterson has talked to 15 people about the job, most notably Caroline Kennedy.

Yesterday a group of Albany Dems pressed the guv not to be swayed by gender or geography in his selection.

"There are several qualified candidates for the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Clinton, and we urge you to consider them based on their merits," the group of 15 Democrats wrote.

Between the drama unfolding here in New York and the Rod Blagojevich shenanigans over President-elect Obama's Senate seat,  Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco has introduced legislation calling for U.S. Senate vacancies be filled by special election, rather than gubernatorial appointments.
