NHL Game Summary – Pittsburgh at NY Islanders

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Petr Sykora netted the only goal of the shootout to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.

Tyler Kennedy had a pair of goals in regulation and Dany Sabourin made 19 saves through overtime and then came up with the three all-important shootout stops.

Doug Weight started things off with a backhander into the left pad and Sykora lifted a backhand shot over the glove of Joey MacDonald in close. Bill Guerin then had a forehand shot gloved by Sabourin and Miroslav Satan fired a wrist shot into the shoulder of MacDonald.

Trent Hunter had a chance to extend the session for New York and fired a low shot that got caught up in Sabourin's left pad. The play had to reviewed as the netminder slid back into his own net but it was eventually upheld.

Jordan Staal also found the back of the net for Pittsburgh, which has won three straight. Michael Zigomanis had two assists in the win.

Weight had a goal and an assist with Andy Hilbert and Tim Jackman adding goals in a losing effort for New York, which has lost eight of its last 10. Andy Sutton contributed a pair of assists.

MacDonald has been getting most of the goaltending duties this year with Rick DiPietro on injured reserve and made 29 saves in a losing effort.

Matt Cooke hit the crossbar on a screen in front just about eight minutes into the third and the Isles kept the door open by faltering on a power-play opportunity with under nine minutes to play. The Pens turned up the heat late in the period and were rewarded for their aggressive play when Alex Goligoski's slap shot from the right point was tipped past MacDonald by Kennedy with the clock showing 3:15 left.

A bouncing puck with under five seconds to play in regulation found its way to the Isles' Frans Nielsen in front but he fired the puck high and over the net to send the game to overtime.

Things picked up with 1 1/2 minutes left in OT as the Pens broke out on a 3- on-1 but a pass in the slot to Evgeni Malkin hopped over his stick and the Isles had a chance off their own on a partial breakaway by Guerin but Sabourin poke-checked the backhand chance to force a shootout.

The Isles struck for the game's first goal when Guerin's shot deflected off a skate and right to Weight at the left circle, where he elevated a wrister over Sabourin's glove for a 1-0 lead with 3:37 left in the opening session.

Pittsburgh tied the game 2:16 into the second on a nicely executed give-and- go. Kennedy held the puck above the left circle and hit Zigomanis cutting through the slot. Zigomanis got MacDonald to commit and dished back to Kennedy, who had broke for the left post for an easy score.

New York, though, got a pair of goals later in the second to take a 3-1 lead. Weight put on the brakes at the right circle, allowing a trailing defender to slide by, and released a shot on goal that was blocked away to the far side where Jackman was waiting to stuff it home.

Hilbert lit the lamp on a backhander in front with 5 1/2 minutes left in the period, but Staal netted a goal on a breakaway when the puck took a strange carom off the boards 1 1/2 minutes later to make it a 3-2 game heading to the third.
