John Smoltz Wants to Pitch For the Mets

The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo reports that John Smoltz would like to sign with a team that has a chance to play in the World Series next season.

He hopes that's still the Atlanta Braves, the team for whom he has pitched since 1988, but the 41-year-old free agent is considering the Red Sox, the New York Mets, and his hometown Detroit Tigers as possible destinations, according to a major league source.

I'm not sure the Tigers qualify as a contender, but Smoltz' other choices make sense. From his perspective, that is. The Mets have been down this nostalgia road before with Tom Glavine and we all remember how well that played out for them. They don't need to double down on that mistake by rolling the dice on Smoltz. He's been hurt too often to rely on in the rotation -- they could bring Pedro Martinez back if they wanted that agita -- and the team needs stability behind Johan Santana and Mike Pelfrey.
