A woman died and five firefighters were injured after a fire broke out at a home on Staten Island, authorities said.

The fire broke out at a home on Hatfield Place in Elm Park just before 5:45 a.m. Thursday, the FDNY said.

The 21-year-old woman was initially listed in critical condition, but later succumbed to her injuries, police said.

A dog also died in the fire, officials said, noting that the woman and the dog were the only ones inside the house when the fire broke out. 

The five firefighters suffered minor injuries, the FDNY said. 

The fire started on the first floor of the home, officials said. Firefighters had brought the blaze under control by around 7 a.m., the FDNY said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
