The search for a swimmer reported missing off Point Pleasant Beach in New Jersey has been suspended.
The 24-year-old woman was reportedly swimming with a friend when she went missing around 2 a.m., according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Thomas Kadlec, 23, reported that he and Zuzana Oravcova, of Slovakia, were pulled into high surf conditions in the water. He was able to swim ashore, but she did not, police said. Kadlec immediately ran to an employee on the boardwalk who then reported the missing swimmer to police.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones during this extremely difficult time,” said Capt. Scott Anderson, commander of Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay. “Suspending a search is always a difficult decision and it’s something we don’t take lightly.”
The body of a female washed ashore Monday morning in the area of East Shell Way and Ocean Road that matches the description of Oravcova, police said, but they can't confirm it is Oravcova.
Point Pleasant Beach police, the Coast Guard, New Jersey State Police Marine Unit, Point Pleasant Beach Fire Company, fire companies from Bay Head and Mantoloking, and dive teams from Brick, Brielle and Point Pleasant Beach all helped in the search of Oravcova using boats and a helicopter.
Oravcova was a student working at Jenkinson's boardwalk as part of a work program.
