NYPD Details Security Plans for Super Bowl Bonanza in Times Square

The NYPD has unveiled a security plan for the Super Bowl bonanza in Times Square that includes dog teams, armed Hercules squads, extra surveillance cameras and radiation-detecting helicopters, among other measures, according to a published report.

While the football action will unfold several miles away at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., Times Square will be converted into a 14-block theme park the week leading up to the big event, with an eight-lane, 58-foot high toboggan run that will sit on Broadway between 40th and 41st streets for the duration of the festivities.

Organizers expect more than a million people to visit the "Super Bowl boulevard" that will stretch down Broadway from 33rd to 48th street from 12 a.m. Jan. 26 to Feb. 1.

In addition to the toboggan run, which will be able to accommodate up to 1,000 riders an hour, the park will feature giant versions of the Super Bowl Roman numerals, an outdoor concert stage, an autograph stage containing the Vince Lombardi Trophy and broadcast sets for all of the major television networks.

"As always, the NYPD is taking a multi-layered approach to protect the public at these events," Inspector John O'Connell of the NYPD's Counter-Terrorism Bureau told the New York Post.

O'Connell told the paper it hadn't yet been decided if people will be allowed to carry backpacks and other large bags into Super Bowl-related events.

The Super Bowl will be held Feb. 2.
