Governors Island has a new resident.
A calico cat washed up on the shore of the 172-acre island last weekend, healthy but with no ID tags, and apparently has been making herself at home, mewing at maintenance workers and snacking on canned tuna, according to a published report.
“She’s been going up to island workers and personnel to say hello,” Trust for Governors Island Chief of Staff Elizabeth Rapuano told DNAInfo. “She has a great personality and she seems to like people.”
The unidentified kitty first showed up near Water Taxi Beach Sunday night, shivering and hungry. Staffers told DNAInfo they believe a storm swept her into the harbor, and she managed to cling on to a piece of trash that brought her to the island.
A veterinarian determined the cat to be healthy. Governors Island staffers say she’s “welcome to stay,” and, while they have yet to name her, they’re open to suggestions.
Governors Island opens to the public on May 27.
