Funeral arrangements have been announced for the NYPD officer shot and killed inside a mobile command truck in the Bronx as Fourth of July celebrations were winding down earlier in the week.
The NYPD says the wake for Officer Miosotis Familia, 48, will be held at World Changers Church Monday. There will be two viewings, one from 2 to 4 p.m., and the other from 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral will be held at the church Tuesday morning at 10 a.m.
As Familia's body was transported from Bellevue Hospital to the Schuyler Hill Funeral Home Thursday night, hundreds of her fellow officers lined up to salute the ambulance carrying her. Residents gathered along East Tremont Avenue to pay their respects, as did members of the FDNY and other emergency services.
Familia leaves behind three children, a 20-year-old daughter and two 12-year-old twins. In a statement Friday, the oldest child, Genesis, said, "Our dear and amazing mother was selfless and sacrificed so much for us."
"She was incredibly funny. She was so stunningly beautiful and always had a piece of wisdom to share with us," said Genesis. "She was especially warm and erudite woman who fiercely loved her children and went to work every day and proud to do her job, to protect us."
"She was a loving mother, daughter, sister and aunt to all of us. We will miss her so. Our mom Miosotis Familia was our pride. We love you mom."
The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which has a tradition of helping with the needs of first responders killed in the line of duty, announced Friday it's donating $100,000 to Familia's family, and is asking for the community's help giving more. The families of Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, the NYPD officers slain in a similar ambush in December 2014, are also donating $5,000 each. And the Dallas Police Department, which lost five police officers in a sniper attack last year, announced it's donating $25,000.
Familia joined the NYPD later than most people, working as a nurse for much of her adult life. Friends who know her best said both professions were a natural fit because she lived to take care of others. Familia spent her entire 12-year NYPD career with the 46th Precinct in the Bronx.
With her death, Familia becomes one of the few female officers to be killed in the line of duty. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, just six of the 135 officers killed in the line of duty nationwide last year were women.
Familia was sitting in the marked RV-like NYPD command unit near 183rd Street and Morris Avenue in the Bronx just after midnight Thursday when police say 34-year-old Alexander Bonds shot her through the passenger window. Her partner desperately radioed for help, and she was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition. She later died.
