A 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash in the Bronx Saturday, police said.
Officials said a 1988 Toyota Sienna was going eastbound on East 233 Street at a high speed before veering onto the sidewalk and hitting 32-year-old Derrick Callender. The driver and the other people in the vehicle ditched the car and fled by foot, according to police.
The 22-year-old faces murder and manslaughter charges in connection with Callender's death.
Callender was standing on the curb outside of his Wakefield apartment when the out-of-control driver ran him over shortly after midnight, said Andres Sanchez, his father-in-law.
"Nice guy, nice guy," Sanchez said through tears, noting that Callender's children will have to grow up without their father. "He never had problems with nobody."
