Man Dies in Fall Down Elevator Shaft at Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square

A man died when he fell down an elevator shaft at the Marriott Marquis hotel in Times Square, hotel officials and police said.

An investigation was ongoing at the hotel late Thursday afternoon, according to Marriott spokeswoman Kathleen Duffy.

The 28-year-old man fell from the eighth floor to below street-level shortly before 4 p.m., according to police.

Glass elevators go up 48 floors in the Marriott’s large atrium lobby.

It's unclear if the man was attempting to commit suicide or if the fall was an accident. He was not in the elevator when he fell, but landed at the bottom of the open shaft, Duffy said.

Police said no one has been arrested in the man's death.
