NJ Hit-Run Victim Expected to Lose Leg

Two brothers struck by a hit-and-run driver in New Jersey have undergone surgery and one is expected to lose a leg, according to a fund-raising website set up by a family member.

Michael Viruet, 20, and his 11-year-old brother Adrian, who live in Union City, were hospitalized in critical condition Friday after being hit by a red Nissan Rouge that had jumped a curb where the two were walking in North Bergen.

Police are still looking for the driver.

The brothers had just left the Columbia Park theater in North Bergen at about 10 p.m. when they were struck by the car. The younger brother was thrown by the impact and became impaled on a fence, authorities said.

Their 15-year-old sister, who was with them at the time of the crash, narrowly missed being hit, police said.

Doctors operated on Michael Viruet Sunday morning, but "unfortunately he will lose his right leg," an older brother wrote on the gofundme website, which was set up to raise money for medical expenses.

"Adrian is doing well, he had surgery this morning on his leg," the brother added.

The suspect's vehicle is believed to have tinted windows, heavy damage to the passenger side front end, and is missing part of the front passenger fender and headlight, which were found at the scene, officials said.

Police are asking anyone with information on the driver to contact the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office at 201-915-1300.
