An off-duty New York City police officer who was shot in the chest as he broke up a robbery has been released from the hospital to cheers.

Officer Ivan Marcano had one hand on his chest wound and the other on his gun when he fatally shot 18-year-old Prince James, of the Bronx, Wednesday evening. He was released on Friday, and thousands of officers in uniform cheered him from the street.

Marcano was promoted to detective from his hospital bed by Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. He was expected to recover fully. The off-duty officer had identified himself while breaking up the robbery. The victim was pistol-whipped and had $80 stolen.

Two other suspects, a 17-year-old and a 20-year-old, were arrested Friday on charges of attempted murder and assault.
