Driver Arrested in Hit-Run Near Midtown Tunnel That Critically Injured Woman: NYPD

Police say they've arrested a Harlem man in connection with a hit-and-run near the Queens Midtown Tunnel that critically injured a woman Sunday morning.

Robert Schuman, 63, was arrested Wednesday on charges of leaving the scene of an accident and failing to yield to a pedestrian, police said. It wasn't immediately know if he'd retained an attorney.

Police said the victim, a 60-year-old woman, was crossing East 38th Street near Tunnel Approach Street at about 10:30 a.m. when a late-model dark-colored Toyota Sienna van struck her.

The driver did not stop and fled northbound on East 37th Street against the flow of traffic before turning northbound onto First Avenue, police said.

The victim suffered a serious left leg injury as well as trauma to her body. She was taken to an area hispital in critical but stable condition.
