A New York City taxi driver accused of a fatal hit-and-run believed he struck a pothole, not a woman, his lawyer says.
John Bangura was arraigned Sunday and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
The 68-year-old man's attorney said Bangura thought he had hit a pothole at 3:30 a.m. on Saturday in Manhattan's East Village, the Daily News reported.
Kenya Flores, 44, of the Bronx was lying in the roadway when she was hit by the yellow cab on East 16th Street, police said. It's not clear why she was lying in the street.
“While he stated he hit a pothole, that statement is inconsistent with the evidence in this case,” Assistant District Attorney Ashley Durkin said at the arraignment.
Bangura's lawyer, Marnie Zien, wants more information on how Flores came to be lying in the street, she said.
