What to Know

  • America "was never that great" and won't be great until all Americans share true equality, Gov. Cuomo said
  • The remarks came in a speech blasting Republican President Donald Trump and his slogan, "Make America Great Again"
  • Republicans quickly condemned the remarks and the state GOP party bought him a $55 one-way ticket to Canada

Republicans have purchased a bus ticket to Canada for Gov. Cuomo after the Democrat said America "was never that great."

The state Republican Party said the $55 one-way, Albany-to-Montreal ticket is valid only on Friday, and that if Cuomo believes his own remarks he should leave the country.

Cuomo's primary challenger, former "Sex and the City" star Cynthia Nixon, meanwhile knocked him for trying - and failing - to sound like a progressive.

The governor's allies say he was only acknowledging America's history of racism and inequality.

Cuomo made the remark Wednesday while criticizing Republican President Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan at a Manhattan event.

He said Trump wants to return to an era of intolerance and that America will be truly great when it has true equality.
