A 47-year-old man and his wife were terrorized by a knife-wielding man who spat on them on a Manhattan subway Wednesday, then flashed the weapon, gashed the man and chased them up the stairs before they could get help, cops say.

The couple was on a northbound 2 train just before 3 p.m., the middle of the afternoon, when cops say the stranger started arguing with them. It wasn't clear what the discussion was about, but he got off the train at Wall Street.

The couple went to get off at the same stop, which is when the suspect spit in their direction, police say. They were all on the platform when he showed them a knife, then slashed the husband once on his right arm.

The couple raced up the stairs from the platform to the mezzanine with their attacker, who had given chase, close behind. He ran off when he saw the husband approach the transit booth clerk for help. The husband was taken to a hospital, where he got stitches for the laceration to his arm. His wife wasn't hurt.

Police released surveillance footage of the suspect (above). Anyone with information about him is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
