Woman Killed in Brooklyn Hit-Run: NYPD

A woman was killed in a hit-and-run while crossing a street and a man was hit and killed by driver with a suspended license just hours apart in the same Brooklyn neighborhood Wednesday evening, authorities say.

Sofiya Ostrovskaya was run down by a car at Cropsey Avenue and Bay 35th Street in Bath Beach at about 7:15 p.m., according to the NYPD. The vehicle that hit her drove off after the impact.

She was taken to the hospital after the crash and was pronounced dead.

And a few hours later, 61-year-old John Saldiran was hit and killed by a car while crossing Bay Parkway. The driver of the vehicle, Naghman Mehdi, was chaged with driving as an unlicensed operator afterward.

Neighbor Mike Cerillo said he saw the gruesome aftermath of the crash that killed Ostrovskaya, describing an elderly woman covered in blood and a distraught young man with her.

"It's very upsetting," said Cerillo. "My mother's that age, and with all that's going on with the hit-and-runs in the city, it's something that hits close to home."

He said there's "a lot of speeding" around the intersection.

"He's a low-life," Cerillo added of the hit-run driver. "How could you leave anybody on the street to die?"
