NJ College Student Hit, Killed By Truck in Massachusetts

The man killed by a vehicle while crossing a busy Massachusetts street last weekend has been identified as a University of Massachusetts-Amherst student from New Jersey.

Prosecutors in Belchertown announced Monday that the man who died Saturday was 20-year-old Matthew Schiek, of Freehold, New Jersey.

Authorities say Schiek was crossing Route 9  just before 2 a.m. when he was struck by an pickup truck headed east.

The death remains under investigation.

The driver has cooperated with investigators and drugs, alcohol and erratic operation do not appear to be factors.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that Schiek was a mechanical and industrial engineering major. A group of friends said in a statement that he was "great student, athlete, musician, but most of all an amazing friend."
