Transit Boss in NYC to Revieal Rail Service Effort

Mayor MIchael Bloomberg to be at announcement at Penn Station

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Mary Peters is visiting New York City to announce a new effort to develop rail service on the Northeast Corridor and around the nation.

She's making her announcement at Pennsylvania Station. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is joining her Monday to speak about the project.

Also speaking and answering questions are Republican Florida Rep. John Mica, Democratic New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney and Republican Delaware Rep. Mike Castle.

Peters said travel habits are changing and Americans are driving less even as gas prices drop. Subways, buses and rail systems such as Amtrak are reporting record ridership increases.

Peters recently announced the federal government would provide $30 million for 15 passenger rail projects aimed at boosting capacity and on-time performance.
