Snow Storms Force Some NY Communities to Cut Back on Salt-Spreading

Some Hudson Valley communities have cut back on salt-spreading during recent snow storms because of delays in salt shipments from suppliers.

Kingston Public Works Superintendent Michael Schupp tells the Kingston Daily Freeman that the department used about 50 to 75 tons of salt during the snow storm at the start of this week. Usually, they'd use about 100 tons.

Schupp says his department has received only about 216 of the 450 tons of salt it ordered from Morton Salt this winter.

Other towns and counties in the region are having the same problem with salt purchased through the state's contract with Morton.

Morton spokeswoman Denise Lauer tells the newspaper that the problem is that demand has surged due to the frequency of snow storms, but trucks that normally deliver salt have been redeployed for snow removal.
