1 in Custody After Shots Fired in Front of New York Nursery School: Sources

One person is in custody after shots were fired in front of a nursery school in Westchester County Tuesday, multiple law enforcement sources tell NBC 4 New York.

Authorities responded to a call of shots fired in front of New Rochelle Day Nursery on Clinton Avenue and Thomas Place shortly before 12:45 p.m.

Law enforcement sources say people in cars driving in the intersection in front of the day care exchanged gun fire; one person drove himself to a hospital in Mount Vernon and said he had been shot in New Rochelle. The other person involved in the shooting drove off, the sources said.

A bulletin went out for that person of interest and county police spotted that individual's car in Yonkers, law enforcement sources said. The person was taken into custody and a weapon was recovered, the sources said.

It wasn't clear what prompted the gunfire; no children or teachers were hurt.

The investigation is ongoing.

One woman had just gone to the day care to drop off something for her grandson when the shooting happened.

"We're in shock. In the broad daylight, for something like this to happen in this residential community," she said.

Neighbor Raymond Adams said he heard the gunshots and began running toward the day care.

"What was scary to me was that it was right in front of the kids so we ran up here to see if we could assist, but everyone was safe," he said.
