New York's U.S. senator-designate has pledged to combat gun violence while protecting hunters' rights, which she calls ``a core value'' upstate.

Kirsten Gillibrand was selected Friday by Gov. David Paterson to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton in the U.S. Senate. She spoke briefly Sunday after meeting with Paterson,
Clinton and Sen. Charles Schumer at a Manhattan hotel.
She promises to "hit the ground running" and says that on issues such as gun control on which she differs from fellow Democrats there's "enormous space for common ground."
Paterson picked Gillibrand after Clinton was sworn in as secretary of state. The selection came after presumed front-runner Caroline Kennedy withdrew from contention.
