Man Proposes in Back of NYC Taxi With Meaningful Medallion Number

John Tracy, 29, found a cab with the same medallion number as one driven by his girlfriend's grandfather for 40 years

A New York City man surprised his girlfriend with a marriage proposal in the back of a cab with the same medallion number as the taxi her grandfather drove for 40 years.

John Tracy, 29, said his girlfriend, Lesley Frankel, 28, was always on the lookout for cabs with 8D99, her late grandfather's medallion number.

"It would something I always did, I always looked for it," Frankel told NBC 4 New York on Wednesday.

But she never found it, after years of scanning every cab that passed.

So when Tracy began planning a proposal, he set out to find that cab. He called 311, he filed a phony lost item report, but nothing led him to that cab. He eventually turned to the Taxi & Limousine Commission for help.
Tracy was able to arrange for the taxi to be near his girlfriend's workplace on Tuesday, and hailed it as it came up the street.

"I saw it from around the corner and I think I was in a lot of shock ... the whole thing seemed very surreal," Frankel said.

Frankel noticed the number right away, and when they got inside, he popped the question with a 1.6-carat diamond ring.

"I had a feeling the 'yes' was coming, I just wanted to do everything I could to make it a memorable one," Tracy said.
