Ex-Mayor Convicted of Taking Bribes Ordered to go to Prison

A former New York mayor convicted of taking bribes has been ordered to report to prison by the end of the month after undergoing surgery.

The Journal News reports that federal prosecutors say former Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin underwent successful surgery on Tuesday.

Jasmin's scheduled surrender has been delayed twice. She was convicted of mail fraud and extortion last April and later sentenced to four years in prison.

Jasmin was mayor in 2012 when an FBI operative gave her $5,000 and a 50 percent stake in a purported development project in exchange for her support.

Federal attorneys say the judge last week rejected a request that Jasmin remain free as she appeals her conviction and agreed to her surrender date.
