A prosecutor says a driver who consumed an "incredibly high amount" of prescription drugs has pleaded guilty in the deaths of a New York couple.
Rockland County District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe says 24-year-old Matthew Sindone of Nanuet faces four to 12 years in prison when he's sentenced on Jan. 10.
Sindone has pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide in the June deaths of New City residents Aline and Neil Block.
Authorities say the defendant ran a red light and plowed into them after abusing anti-anxiety drugs.
Both vehicles were mangled wrecks, first responders said at the time. Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to get into the Camry to retrieve the couple.
Neil and Aline Block were on their way home from brunch when Sindone crashed into them. The couple, who had been married for 47 years, were both retired -- Neil Block worked in the garment industry, his wife was a teacher. They had two children and four grandchildren.
Authorities say Sindone didn't have a license at the time of the crash; it had been suspended because he was a no-show at a court appearance for a traffic violation. He also allegedly had Xanax on him at the time of the crash, investigators say.
