Boiler Fire Damages Bronx School, Injures 5 Firefighters: FDNY

Five firefighters were hurt battling a three-alarm blaze that started in the boiler room of a Catholic high school in the Bronx, officials say.

The fire at Monsignor Scanlan High School at 915 Hutchinson River Pkwy. in Schuylerville started shortly after 6 p.m. Friday and was under control by 8 p.m., the FDNY says.

The principal and a few custodians were inside the building when the fire broke out, and they got out safely, officials said.

The FDNY said the fire started in the boiler and worked its way into the walls and the cockloft of the building. That's where the building sustained the most damage.

Five firefighters were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries.

A spokesman from the Archdiocese of New York said a team will head to the school over the weekend to work the with the principal and the parish to assess the damage.
