Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as well as the National Day of Service, and a host of events around town will honor the slain civil right leader and the practice of giving to others.
The Brooklyn Academy of Music kicks off its 25th annual tribute to King on the day commemorating what would have been his 82nd birthday. The program starts at 10:30 a.m. and Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Council Speaker Christine Quinn and other lawmakers are expected.
In Harlem, The Rev. Al Sharpton will preside over the National Action Network's Martin Luther King Jr. Day Public Policy Forum, beginning at noon. That's another stop for Bloomberg, Quinn and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY.)
Volunteers from Organizing For America will participate in a community service project at Central Harlem Alcohol Crisis Center at 1 p.m.
In Queens the Museum of the Moving Image will screen a documentary about King at 3 p.m., called "King: A Filmed Record."
The Harlem Gospel Choir will celebrate Dr. King's life and legacy with a 3 and 4 p.m. performance at the Children's Museum of Manhattan and city teens will be awarded for outstanding service work.
For the national holiday, schools, banks and Wall Street are closed and there's no mail service
