1/19: World Record Appreciation Society

…plus Patti Smith on her new memoir and Elaine Showalter on ladywriters

SUPERLATIVE: The always entertaining scamps behind the World Record Appreciation Society bring together hopefuls for 10 new record attempts live! onstage! at Joe’s Pub. We’re most looking forward to the heat for “Fastest Reenaction Of ‘The Shining’'s I'm Gonna Bash Your Brains In Scene”; we trust you agree. 9:30PM.

‘PEOPLE’ PERSON: Patti Smith, tender? Indeed: the folk-rocker’s memoir of her relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, “Just Kids: From Brooklyn to the Chelsea Hotel, a Life of Art and Friendship”, out this week, is being heralded as a surprisingly vulnerable, affecting tome. Katherine Lanpher interviews Smith at Barnes & Noble’s Upstairs at the Square (Union Square) at 7PM.

SPICE GIRLS: Provocative literary critic (and mama of comic Michael) Elaine Showalter discusses her latest oeuvre, a survey of the U.S. landscape of ladywriters called “A Jury of Her Peers: Celebrating American Women Writers from Anne Bradstreet to Annie Proulx” at the Tenement Museum with fellow critic Wendy Martin (stepping in for canceller Erica “Fear of Flying” Jong). Lotta fierce estrogen in this room, kids. 6:30PM.
