Westchester Candidate Loses Republican Support

Republicans in Westchester say they're withdrawing support for their party's candidate to challenge U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey after questions were raised about an essay he published in 2001.

Westchester County GOP Chairman Doug Colety told the Journal News of White Plains that the party had decided to drop its support
of Jim Russell for the 18th district.

The essay came to the party's attention after the Politico website highlighted Russell's essay in a blog post Monday. The essay appears to embrace eugenics.

Russell told the Journal News that his essay was a ``research paper'' and that it had been ``misinterpreted.''

Russell didn't return a call from The Associated Press requesting comment on Tuesday.
