Woman Shot and Killed in Front of Nephew in NJ Carjacking: Sources

Police have arrested two men and a teen after a Newark woman was shot and killed in front of her 7-year-old nephew during a carjacking in the city, law enforcement sources say.

Shuri Henry, 40, was shot in the chest shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday on South 20th Street, according to Essex County prosecutors.

Henry was returning from Thanksgiving dinner with her relatives and had her nephew with her at the time, sources say.

Four young men who had tried to carjack another woman down the street apparently came up to her and demanded her keys as she was about to go up the steps of her home, according to sources.

The men shot her in the chest and fled in her car, police say.

Henry was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead about 30 minutes after the shooting. Her nephew was not injured.

Police were searching for Henry's vehicle Friday morning when officers spotted it and gave chase, according to sources.

Four people inside the car took off running; three of them were arrested after a foot chase, sources say. The fourth person got away.

Those who were arrested included a 15-year-old boy and two men. The prosecutor's office said Friday night that two people were being charged with carjacking and homicide.

Henry lived at the house after caring for her mother, who died several months ago. A memorial for her was already forming outside the home Friday morning.
