Cops Hunt Tranquilizer Dart Lost in Efforts to Euthanize Whale

Police in East Hampton, Long Island, have put up an unusual "wanted'' poster. They are hunting for a tranquilizer dart lost in the surf during a struggle to euthanize a beached whale.

On Saturday, a team of divers was searching for the missing dart, which contained a dose of sedatives when it ricocheted off the whale.

Police fear the dart might still contain some medication and could harm someone, although experts said it was likely the drugs washed away.

The 13-ton baby washed up on Main Beach in East Hampton on Tuesday, too weak to save.

The whale died Friday after a third round of sedatives was administered and three gunshots were fired into its body.
