13-Year-Old Girl Crossing Street With Friend Hit, Killed by Car in Queens: Police

A 13-year-old girl died and another 13-year-old girl she was walking with was hurt when they were hit by a car on their way to high school in Queens Monday, police say.

The girls were crossing the street on Cross Bay Boulevard at 149th Avenue shortly before 7 a.m., headed to the nearby Robert H. Goddard High School of Communication Arts and Technology, when they were hit by a 55-year-old driver.

Jazmine Marin suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the hospital. A witness said the girl was unconscious and not moving; he said there was nothing emergency crews could do to save her.

The other teen suffered a leg injury and is expected to be OK.

Police say the driver stayed at the scene. It appears the girls were not walking in the crosswalk when they were hit, and no criminality is suspected, cops say.

Two residents said that in the 40 years they've lived in the area, they've never seen a crossing guard. The entrance to the school is on the other side of the football field, but the residents said they thought there should be crossing guards at all access points leading to the school.

The NYPD, meanwhile, told NBC 4 New York that it does not assign crossing guards to middle schools.

The Department of Education said it was working closely with the school and community to provide ongoing crisis resources and support.

"I am deeply saddened by this tragic loss, and my heartfelt condolences are with the student’s family and the entire school community during this very difficult time," Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina said in a statement.
