Teen Hit in Head With Hammer at Central NY School: Cops

Assault charges have been lodged against a 15-year-old central New York girl accused of striking another teenage girl with a hammer during a school fight.

Onondaga County sheriff's detective say the fight occurred Monday morning in a second-floor hallway at North Syracuse Junior High School. Faculty and the school resource officer broke up the fight within minutes and the injured girl was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. She was being treated for a non-life threatening cut to her head.

Deputies arrested the teen accused of the assault and recovered the hammer. She was charged with second-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and released to a parent.

The case has been referred to Onondaga County Family Court for further action due to the students' ages.
