Shaken Toddler Dies After Being Taken Off Life Support: Sources

A 2-year-old girl who was allegedly shaken by her stepfather died after she was taken off life support Friday, law enforcement sources said.

According to police, officers responded to the child's home on Dumont Avenue in Brownsville Thursday morning after her family reported she was having difficulty breathing. They found her semiconscious with bruises and head trauma.

She was taken to the hospital in critical condition and placed on life support, while her mother and stepfather were questioned, police said.

The girl's stepfather, David Adams, 25, was arrested and charged with felony assault, reckless assault of a child, and endangering the welfare of a child after it was determined that he had violently shaken the child, police said.

The family has a history with the city's Adminstration for Children's Services, sources said. The girl, who police identified as Thaiya Spruill, died Friday evening after she was taken off life support.

Authorities have not yet said whether charges against Adams will be upgraded.
