Prepare for Uber Surge Pricing on New Year's Eve, Company Warns

An Uber ride on New Year’s Eve could be nine times as expensive as a non-holiday ride because the car service app plans to use surge pricing as New Yorkers ring in the New Year, amNewYork reported.

In a statement on its website, Uber said users should expect a higher cost for a ride and offered tips for users to ease the surge pricing burden.

“Surge Pricing shouldn’t be a surprise. Let’s toast to you running a Fare Estimate in the app before you ride,” the statement reads, referring to an option that allows users to get an estimated fare price.

“To avoid the highest fares, head to the festivities early or catch a ride right after midnight,” the statement reads.

The car service app also suggested using uberPool or splitting a fare with a friend to ease the cost burden.

Uber said the highest demand for drivers on New Year’s Eve will be between 12:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m., according to amNewYork. Prices for rides can spike up to nine times the usual fare during surge pricing.
