Grand Jury Indicts Suspects in Bronx Police Shooting

A grand jury has indicted two suspects in last week's shooting of two NYPD officers in the Bronx.

The accused gunman, 24-year-old Jason Polanco, was indicted on a number of attempted murder charges, along with robbery, assault, and weapons charges, according to the Bronx district attorney.

Joshua Kemp, 28, was indicted on robbery and weapons charges.

Kemp's lawyer said his client was not involved in the shooting. Polanco's lawyer said his client will plead not guilty.

The two suspects, described as career criminals, robbed a Bronx deli last Monday night, according to authorities. A group of five plainclothes officers who were approaching their end of the shift responded and canvassed the neighborhood, and two of the officers, 30-year-old Andrew Dossi and 38-year-old Aliro Pellerano, were hit by bullets allegedly fired by Polanco from a Chinese restaurant.

Kemp was stuck in the bicep by a bullet Polanco fired through the window of the restaurant, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said last week. The bullet went straight through Kemp and hit one of the police officers.

Polanco and Kemp fled the scene and carjacked a vehicle. They were located and arrested the next day -- Polanco in the Bronx, and Kemp at a hospital where he was treated for his gunshot wound.

Officer Pellarano, who was shot in the abdomen and arm, was released from the hospital last week, while Dossi, who was more seriously injured after being shot in the arm and lower back, remains in the hospital.
