Police Arrest NJ Man who Allegedly Stabbed Wife after 4-Hour Standoff

A man who barricaded himself in his New Jersey apartment after allegedly stabbing his wife held SWAT officers at bay for several hours Friday by threatening to harm himself.

Officers managed to remove the man from his apartment late Friday afternoon.

The man had earlier stabbed his 59-year-old wife several times in the chest and head, police said. She was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, said Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose.

The couple's 9-year-old grandson was inside the Dillard Court house at the time, but ran outside, screaming. He was safe with his mother, police said.

Three residents of the neighborhood rushed inside the house and pulled the wounded woman outside as her husband continued to slash at her with the knife.

The man's identity hasn't been disclosed by police.

Chopper 4 footage from over the scene at the townhouse on Dillard Court showed several police officers trying to negotiate with the man as he held a large blade to his chest.

Motorists and pedestrians were advised to avoid the area.
