A mother was carjacked and her two children driven away as they sat in the back seat of her vehicle in Newark Thursday evening, police said.

A man approached the driver at Springfield Avenue and South 17th Street at about 7:50 p.m. and forced her out of the parked Nissan Pathfinder, police said. Her two children, 11 months old and 3 years old, were in the back seat.

The suspect fled in the car, then apparently abandoned it blocks later with the kids still in the backseat. An Essex County sheriff's officer located the SUV in front of 532 South 19th St.

The children were unharmed and reunited with their mother.

Police are still investigating and looking for the suspect.
