2 New Yorkers Arrested in Protests in Ferguson: Police

Two New Yorkers were among the 45 people arrested in the protests in Ferguson, Missouri, Tuesday night, police say.

One 29-year-old man, from New York City, was charged with third-degree assault, resisting arrest and unlawful assembly, while an 18-year-old from Rockland County was charged with church interfering, authorities in Missouri say.

Their arrests come after a second day of heated protest following a Missouri grand jury decision not to indict Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson in the Aug. 9 shooting death of Michael Brown.

Seven of the 45 people arrested face felony charges. Tuesday's protests began more peacefully than day before, police said, but took a turn when demonstrators torched one police cruiser and flipped another.

In New York City, police said 10 people were arrested as protesters gridlocked major streets, highways and bridges. Protesters blocked access to the Manhattan side of the Lincoln Tunnel during rush hour Tuesday evening and shut down both the FDR Drive and the West Side Highway.

More than 500 protesters also marched up Broadway and gathered in Times Square.. They chanted "Hands up, don't shoot" and carried signs reading "We will not be silent."

Around 200 protesters also gathered peacefully in nearby Newark, New Jersey.
