NYPD: Suspected Drunk Driver Hits, Kills Pedestrian

A man has been killed after police say he was struck in Queens by a suspected drunk driver in a rental car who was later charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Police say the unidentified pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday on Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights. 

They say Romulo Mejia and his passenger were taken into custody. A crumpled red car could be seen at the scene. 

Police say Mejia refused to take a Breathalyzer test.

Mejia was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter with a previous conviction for DWI, criminally negligent homicide, aggravated unlicensed operator, and DWI with a previous conviction in the past 10 years.

Information on a lawyer for Mejia was not immediately available.
