Officials are warning people to stay out of the water at scores of Long Island beaches because of pollution churned up by the remnants of Tropical Storm Danny.

Storm water runoff often leads to sewage discharges and elevated bacteria levels on Long Island sound.

Nassau County's health department closed 20 beaches as a precautionary measure Saturday because of heavy rainfall.

On eastern Long Island, Suffolk County closed two beaches and advised against bathing at 64 more.

A smaller number of beaches on the Atlantic Ocean side of the island were affected, although authorities said to watch out for dangerous ties and surf.

Health officials say the beaches will be reopened once tidal cycles have flushed the area.

Tropical Storm Danny lost steam and is blowing out of the area.  This was the second tropical storm to pass through in as many weekends, putting a damper on some beachgoers last summer fun.
