NJ Transit Braces for Horse Race Crowds

Horse race aficionados were streaming toward Monmouth Park early Sunday to watch Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.

And New Jersey Transit added trains to help them get to the park and return home.

The horse will race in Sunday's $1 million Haskell Invitational.

Four extra trains will be heading eastbound to Newark and one additional train westbound to Bay Head following the race, NJ Transit officials said. These trains will be “load and go’ and will not follow a set, timed schedule. They will be brought into the station right behind the regularly scheduled trains until the platform crowds ease.

The transit agency will also work with local law enforcement to make sure traffic moves smoothly on Route 36 to the Garden State Parkway.

Summer Shore Express trains to New York Penn Station will also stop at the track.

NJ Transit says riders should buy roundtrip tickets in advance as there are no ticket vending machines at the track train station.
