“Mamma Mia!” to End 14-Year Broadway Run

After 14 years on Broadway, “Mamma Mia!” -- the eighth-longest-running show in Broadway history -- will play its final Broadway performance Sept. 5.

At the time of its closing, the Abba jukebox musical will have played 5,765 regular performances and 14 previews.

Directed by Phyllida Lloyd and featuring a book by Catherine Johnson, “Mamma Mia!” opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in October 2001. It transferred to the Broadhurst Theater in 2013, where it will remain through its closing.

The musical tells the story of a young girl who sets out to discover the identity of her father on the eve of her wedding. Her quest brings three potential men from her mother’s past to the tiny Greek island in which they live. Comedy, of course, ensues.

Over 20 Abba hits are featured in “Mamma Mia!,” including “Dancing Queen,” “Take a Chance on Me” and the song fans will undoubtedly be singing on Sept. 5 -- “Thank You For the Music.”

The show’s creator, Judy Craymer, announced the closing after Thursday night’s Broadway performance.

“I am thrilled that ‘Mamma Mia!’ has brought the music of Abba to Broadway,” Craymer said in a statement to The New York Times. “And so grateful to the hundreds of...people of the theater who have given their professional lives and souls to be part of the...adventure on Broadway.”

“Mamma Mia!” first premiered in 1999 in London’s West End, where it’s now in its 16th year. The musical was adapted into a film starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried in 2008, which currently holds the title of top-grossing musical film ever.

The Broadway show has reportedly grossed more than $600 million, and has been seen by more than 7 million people.
