LIRR Derailment Likely Caused by Track Issue: Amtrak

A track issue was the likely cause of a Long Island Rail Road train derailment on Monday, according to Amtrak.

The agency said a switch point protector guard cover appeared to have become dislodged, which allowed the train's wheels to ride up over it, causing the derailment.

The LIRR train was leaving Penn Station for Hempstead, carrying up to 1,000 people, when it derailed as it entered an East River tunnel around 6:10 p.m. Monday.

Dozens of LIRR trains to and from Penn Station were canceled during both the morning and evening rush hours Tuesday, forcing commuters to wait for later, more crowded trains or find another way home.

Amtrak said repairs had been made and the affected track reopened before Wednesday's morning rush hour.
