Boy, 14, Charged in Shooting Death of Half-Brother, 12

Authorities characterized the shooting as reckless, not deliberate.

A 14-year-old New Jersey boy has been charged with aggravated manslaughter for the shooting death of his 12-year-old half-brother, officials said Wednesday.

Hassan George, 12, was shot and killed at the older boy's home last month.

"His half-brother had called for him to come to the house, and less than an hour later he was dead," the victim's grieving mother, April Alexander, told NBC New York at the time.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said last month that the crime scene indicated the boy was shot once in the chest inside the home. But his body was discovered on the sidewalk outside the house.

The semi-automatic pistol belonged to the 14-year-old's mother, Shaara Green-Sims, a 38-year-old Hudson County Corrections officer who was home at the time of the shooting.

She is not facing any charges because the gun was stored unloaded. Authorities said the 14-year-old loaded and used the gun.

Authorities said he faces aggravated manslaughter charges, and that the shooting was reckless but not deliberate.
