Sandy-Swamped Section of R Line Is Fixed: Cuomo

Trains are set to start rolling Friday on a key stretch of the subway system that has been out of commission since Sandy.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday that R trains would resume running between the Jay Street-MetroTech station in Brooklyn and the Whitehall Street stop in Manhattan. He says service will start in time for Friday morning's rush hour.

About 65,000 riders take the R each weekday.

The line's tunnel under the East River was heavily damaged by the Oct. 29 storm. The R later resumed running within Manhattan only.

Two parts of the subway system remain out of service: the A line between Howard Beach and the Rockaways in Queens, and the No.1 Line south of Rector Street in Lower Manhattan.
