Incidents at Lincoln, Holland Tunnels Cause Traffic Mess

A pair of incidents at the Holland and Lincoln tunnels during rush hour Tuesday evening created a travel mess for commuters trying to get back to New Jersey.

The Holland Tunnel outbound lanes were shut down at about 5:15 p.m. when a driver told Port Authority police that he'd been threatened by another driver, who was now inside the tunnel.

Port Authority police responded and determined the threat was false. The driver who made the allegation, a 38-year-old man with a suspended license, was arrested, a Port Authority police spokesman said.

The tunnel was reopened shortly after the investigation.

At around 4:30 p.m., a Short Line bus leaving the Port Authority bus terminal struck a wall at the Eighth Avenue turnaround, according to Port Authority. It caused long traffic delays at the Holland Tunnel.

Four people sustained minor injuries, police said.
