Tractor-Trailer Fire on Trans-Manhattan Expressway Brings George Washington Bridge Traffic to Standstill

A tractor-trailer fire on the Trans-Manhattan Expressway brought traffic on the George Washington Bridge to a standstill as the peak morning rush got underway Tuesday.

Total traffic reported delays of more than an hour on the New Jersey-bound upper level of the span; by mid-morning, the delays had hit 90 minutes. The Port Authority said traffic was being diverted to the lower level, which was experiencing delays both inbound and outbound.

There was no immediate word on injuries. Traffic cameras showed scores of vehicles inching outbound along the bridge, red brake lights blaring in the fog. Traffic headed to New York City appeared to be flowing well.
