Police shot and killed a fox that attacked a 4-year-old girl near the Jersey shore over the weekend.
The little girl had scratches on her arm, leg and lip after the attack Saturday afternoon in Lakewood, but was otherwise expected to be OK.
Police Lt. Steve Allaire said the girl's mother and another man kicked the fox away from her, and it ran under a deck.
Later when it lunged at a police officer and an animal control official, the officer fired two shots and killed the animal.
The dead fox was being tested for rabies.
